Grow A Pair, Komen

You know the people who organize that really awesome Race for the Cure that happens every year? The one where you get to dress in pink and get together with your friends and get sponsored in order to raise money for breast cancer awareness? Well, a lot of people are really, really mad at them. Like me.

If you weren’t aware, Race For The Cure is put together by the charity, Susan G Komen for the Cure. Komen is the leading breast cancer charity in North America. It gives hope to millions of women who have breast cancer and millions of women who know someone who has breast cancer. It supports millions of women who are active in ensuring that generations of women are looked after. And now many of these women are going to be let down.

Whether you’re pro-choice, anti-choice, conservative or progressive – I think it’s safe to say that you want the greater good for woman kind. In the world of breast cancer awareness, the greater good includes things such as free breast exams – something that is going to deeply decline since Komen doesn’t support Planned Parenthood anymore.

“Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress – a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.”

In the article, Komen For The Cure Halts Grants To Planned Parenthood, The Huffington Post reports that Planned Parenthood provided 4 billion breast exams over the course of five years, and that 170, 000 of those were due to grants from the breast cancer charity.

“Planned Parenthood has been a perennial target of protests, boycotts and funding cutoffs because of its role as the largest provider of abortions in the United States. Its nearly 800 health centers nationwide provide an array of other services, including birth control, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and cancer screening.”

Listen – you’re entitled to your opinion. If you don’t agree with abortion, then you don’t agree with abortion. But boycotting an organization that largely supports low income women in the area of sexual health is fucking stupid – especially if you’re an organization that is based on supporting low income women.

While I don’t completely blame Komen for being scared shitless of bullying anti-choice groups – I think they should grow a pair – of ovaries.

Sign the petition here to protect generations of women from the awful fate of breast cancer. And to tell Komen to grow a pair.
